Paragraph Styles

Here is a tutorial I did on how to use Paragraph Styles in InDesign. I created a video and a PDF of a step-by-step version on how to do this. It’s very convenient to know how to do this because  it makes styling your headings and paragraphs simple and easy to do with just a click of a button. Enjoy!

Photobook: Covers, First Spread, TOC, and Professional Page

I am starting to build my photobook with my own custom design and images that I photographed and edited. I used Adobe InDesign to create two separate documents: one that contained my front and back cover, and another one that contained my Portrait spread, Table of Contents, and Professional Page.

I chose to capture different images of doorknobs in Bannack. I loved how unique each doorknob was and how the surroundings all had different looks and textures. I loved that I was able to find different angles to shoot so that each one had it’s one look and feel to it.

Portraits

For these portraits, I decided to use the same three subjects but get a variety of poses, alignment, and color. I was able to learn that the further away I placed my subject to the background, the more blurry I could get the background to be. One of the challenges I had was during the candid shots, I needed to stay focused on their faces even if they were moving, laughing, etc. I loved that I could take one person and I could make each shot look different by changing the composition, lighting, and location. Then in the end when editing the photos, I can enhance features and make them look like their best self!

Creativity: Closeup and Personal

This week I was able to attach a macro tube to my camera so that I could get very close and sharp images of different subjects. I love how much detail can be seen when being able to get so close to something. The challenging part was to be in the exact place at the right time so that the focal point was indeed in focus because any sort of movement would ruin the picture. The way I was able to get what I wanted in focus was to use the zoom on my lens, and lean backwards and forwards until I was in the right spot. My favorite picture is the top one of just a water drop. It took the most work because it seemed impossible to get that drop to be in focus, but it was so worth it!

Depth: Deep and Shallow

This week’s focus to play with aperture and try and get the subject in focus with the background blurred or get everything in focus all at the same time. I loved taking pictures where there was good, natural lighting because then it was easier to bring up the aperture to get everything in focus and not sacrifice image quality by increasing the ISO from a lack of light. I thought it was neat how I have complete control about what I want to draw the eye to and focus on. My favorite is turning the aperture down low to around 2.0-2.8 and get my background extremely blurry.
